It is important for teachers to have a place to host their classroom outside, an outdoor alternative that could be used for literature circles, journal writing, dramatic performances, poetry reading, etc. After school and on weekends, it could be a place for the community to use.

With guidance from Robert Redecker of Earthworks Natural Building, the outdoor classroom was designed with urbanite (recycled concrete) as a base and capped with cob ( a natural building medium made of straw, clay and sand). This year long project is nearly done. Come join us Saturday, February 9, as we work together to finish it.
Finally, we have our first community garden plots happening. While waiting for all the materials for the final build of the community garden, the Emerson Avenue Community Garden Club is allowing community members who have demonstrated a commitment of time and labor through volunteering to grow in temporary plots this winter and spring. Come see what is growing!
Last year, the Room 54 Writers published a cookbook with recipes based on what they grew in the student garden. Both an eighth grade and sixth grade Language Arts class participated with the eighth graders heading the publishing committee and mentoring the sixth graders. He has been an active member of the Orville Wright Middle School Garden Club, helped build the Emerson Avenue Community Garden 4th of July float and was the impetus and co-constructor of the Little Free Library in the garden. Throughout the summer, Michael would bike over to the garden to work on building the library box. He would show up many times on his own to help out on our community workdays. He had a strong work ethic and commitment to the garden. Michael and his family are moving to Ohio in December. The garden sent him off with a cake.
It was filled with fun, games, pumpkins, and prizes. Even though it started out slow, as time passed more people came and it was a great turn out. We had deliciously scary treats, face painting, tattoos, and a craft table. We had toss games, skill games and walking and jumping games. We also had a beautiful pumpkin patch with scarecrows. We had the best ever 1st Annual Fall Festival ever. I hope I can come next year in 9th grade.
Skyler Lima from Boy Scout Troop #50 just completed his Eagle Scout Project in the garden. He chose as his project to landscape the outlying land around the newly completed seating area installed previously by Boy Scout Troop #915. Take a stroll back there and have a seat. Let this corner help you imagine how the garden will continue to keep growing. Thank you Skylar and your team!
The garden at Orville Wright is growing strong! The crops in our student garden have been harvested, and with them, a sense of accomplishment has filled the spring air. Ms. Cohen’s lucky classes have been stuffing themselves, testing out recipe after recipe- chock full of veggies- grown exclusively in our school garden. After a few weeks of perfecting, we’ve decided to set them out on the world!

Whether you prefer carrots to potatoes, or artichokes to onions, we have something for everyone. And it gets even better! No animals were harmed in the making of this meal. All of meals are vegetarian, yet they still cater to the most carnivorous man’s (or woman’s) palate.

Our Community Dinner will happen on April 21st. It will take place from 4:00 until 7:00; we can promise that the food will be delectable, the garden will be in bloom, and you’ll have a blast!

Together we prepared many of the beds in the student garden, mulched and ended the day with a big planting. Throughout the morning, we collected seeds from plants, painted new signs and learned a new method of planting using triangulation that maximizes how much we can grow. Jeanine Geisregan, an OW parent and master gardener, demonstrated how to compost for us. It was a joyful, energetic day. We posted our favorite quotes from Dr. King on ribbons that we hung on the fence for our community to read. Our next work day is February 4.The Orville Wright Garden Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04306613056082892034noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6906885175168180971.post-65495343773979753982011-12-22T09:35:00.000-08:002011-12-22T09:36:02.222-08:00The Garden Keeps Growing CommunityThe last couple of months have gone by so quickly, so we will have to backtrack and share all the great things that have gone on in the garden.

On Saturday, November 19, the Emerson Avenue Garden Club (the non profit that will be overseeing and managing the community garden) held a yard sale for the garden. It was a very successful fundraiser on many fronts. They collected items from community who emptied out their closets and garages and donated them in support of the garden. We had the Austism class from Westchester High selling their beautifully hand crafted reusable bags. There was even a delectable bake sale. Folks stopped by and bought items, learned about the garden, and reconnected with the school. So many people made this a successful fundraiser and EACGC raised over $700 over the course of the sale.
Students from Ms. Cohen and Mr. Fordyce's classes learned how to create a worm condo and what conditions worms like to live in. We will be feeding our lunch scraps to the worms to create nutrient rich soil and worm tea for our vegetable garden. Willow was an amazing teacher and we all learned so much. She also made us containers to hold our scraps and and a pitcher to keep our worm tea with great labels that she created. We have named all our our worms "The Chakas" and we hope to keep them happy and composting our food for our garden. The Orville Wright Garden Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04306613056082892034noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6906885175168180971.post-76651324144676182682011-07-16T11:14:00.000-07:002011-07-16T11:14:06.226-07:00Tomatoes are the Big Crop of the Summer

Thanks to all the gardeners who planted tomatoes and basil last workday on June 11, the garden is alive with tomatoes. Thank you Christine for all the tomato and basil transplants! Summer in the garden is a little quiet, but our great community partners headed by Dorothy come and water and maintain all the fruit trees at the south end of the garden. On Fridays Ms. Cohen has a fun group of College Bound students preparing beds and planting. Every other Tuesday, Sister Rashida comes and works with a group. Our newest garden angel is Jennifer Sullivan, also our new PTO president. She brings a crew of young people each week to water the mandala garden. The tomatoes thank them:-) and they are growing beans and sunflowers.

April 9 brought the community back together once again to keep greening our space on Emerson Avenue. A multiple generational event, this Saturday we double dug 4 beds, planted 7 trees, weeded, made flags and signs and prepared the larger piece of land for the big tilling. A big thank you to Darin Early and LMU for providing us with awesome food and great labor, including his three wonderful daughters! OWMS students Naya Royas and Clarke Brown sponsored a Lemonade Stand to fund-raise for the garden. After lunch, we had our first ever tree dedication in honor of Helen Rosebaugh. Kathy (Helen's daughter) and her husband Matt were both alumni of OWMS. Helen's husband , Bill, and grand daughter shared in planting an Anna Apple tree in her honor. Dr. Pride pointed out how much this has already become a place for community. Joanne Poyourow taught us how to plant the tree. Another shout out to Princess and her grandfather. So many people have given their sweat and labor to the garden!
Orville Wright just got lucky! Sister Rashida, a certified Master Gardener from the UC Cooperative Extension has come to Orville Wright to work with our students. Thanks to Bryce Collin Davis from LMU for making the great connection. Bryce and Sister Rashida work with two groups of students on Tuesdays and already have them planting broccoli, strawberries, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, etc. in the garden. The Orville Wright Garden Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04306613056082892034noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6906885175168180971.post-55533304795115617132011-03-27T18:17:00.000-07:002011-03-27T20:31:37.163-07:00The Student Garden Keeps Growing
